Metro Namibia is seeking a dedicated and ambitious Junior Data Engineer to join its growing IT team at the Metro Head Office. The successful candidate will help build, maintain and improve the data pipelines that support reporting, analytics and business decision-making across Metro Namibia's retail operations.
The Junior Data Engineer will work with retail and business databases, store systems, Microsoft 365, APIs and flat files to extract, transform and prepare reliable information for the company's data warehouse and reporting environment. The role is suited to someone interested in data engineering, SQL, analytics and working with real-world retail data.
Key Responsibilities:
• Build and maintain ETL/ELT data pipelines from source systems including Arch ERP/POS, SQL Server, Microsoft 365, APIs and flat files into the data warehouse.
• Write and troubleshoot SQL queries to extract, transform and shape sales and operational data.
• Monitor pipeline health, data freshness and failures and assist in resolving data-processing issues.
• Conduct data-quality and reconciliation checks to ensure information used by the business is accurate and dependable.
• Identify trends, anomalies and opportunities within operational and sales datasets.
• Prepare datasets and database views for the reporting team and Power BI reporting environment.
• Document data pipelines, data sources and processes so that information can be maintained and understood by the wider IT team.
• Support reliable reporting and analytics by helping ensure business data remains accurate, documented and trusted.
Requirements:
• Basic to intermediate SQL knowledge, including SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY and aggregate functions.
• Some familiarity with Python for data-related work, or a strong willingness and ability to learn quickly.
• Comfortable working with spreadsheets and complex real-world datasets.
• Relevant qualification in IT, Data, Statistics, Business or Commerce, or equivalent practical experience.
• Clear communication skills with the ability to explain data-related issues to non-technical colleagues.
• Curious, methodical and eager to develop professionally.
Knowledge and Experience:
• Exposure to ETL, scripting or data-pipeline tools will be beneficial.
• Power BI data-modelling awareness will be advantageous.
• Experience or exposure to retail, FMCG or multi-site operations will be beneficial.
